Hospice started with a work force comprised of volunteers. Currently the federal guidelines for Medicare certified agencies require at least 5% of patient time to be provided by hospice volunteers.
Training hospice volunteers is often postponed until a large enough group can be assembled to participate in on site training.
The HVTO Course page provides details on how to begin training at the moment of inspired desire to serve. Hospice volunteer training can be done conveniently at home or wherever there is access to a computer. The hospice volunteer program is designed to help strengthen the understanding of hospice for volunteers and those seeking more information on caring for a loved one with a terminal illness.
Training is $10 for the full hospice volunteer training program.
Upon completion, the student is eligible for administrative hospice volunteer responsibilites.
*Note: On site hospice training programs are not replaced by this course.
The training addresses the core concepts that Medicare Conditions of Participation require for hospice volunteer services.
After completion of training, the student must complete agency specific protocols to volunteer with hospice. For example, background check, required health screening and agency policy and procedures.
The course is perfect for anyone wanting to know about the hospice philosophy of care:
- Funeral Home Directors
- Medical Professionals
- Church Members
- Clubs and Civic Organizations
- Long Term Care Staff
- Individuals and Caregivers
Certificates are available online at no charge after completion of the course.
